SFE employee set to take part in Birmingham Running Festival 🏃‍♀️

#TeamSFE – SFE employee Beth set to take part in this year’s Birmingham Running Festival 🏃‍♀️

This year Beth will be taking on a 10k in order to raise funds for Services For Education, encouraging others to donate or even become a Team SFE member themselves 🏆

Back in March we chatted to Beth to find out what encouraged her to sign up for the challenge, as well as how she plans to prepare for her upcoming running journey, which you can read more about here🔗

Today we’re catching up with Beth to find out how her training is going in the lead up to the race 🏃‍♀️

Hey Beth! How’s your training going?

Since signing up for the race, I’ve upped my training game and have been running around twice per week to keep up my stamina ahead of July. And I’ve subsequently been mainlining bananas to keep up the energy levels (the Runger is real!).

The longer evenings have also made a real difference, as being able to run in slightly nicer weather has definitely helped boost motivation.

Any challenges so far?

At the start of my training back in March, you could say that I went slightly running crazy and was aiming to run up to 3-4 times per week, but for me this just wasn’t sustainable.

Not only did over doing it cause me an injury, but it also zapped my energy levels and took some of the enjoyment out of the process – after all, it’s all about the journey, not the destination.

I decided to reduce my runs to 1-2 times per week, allowing me to fit in other forms of exercise (including strength training, which is also important for runners), allowing me to enjoy the process and strike a balance between training and everyday life!

What are you looking forward to when you take part in the run?

As cheesy as it may sound, one of the biggest things I’m looking forward to during the race is the sense of community.

Fellow runners will know the little nod we give each other when we pass another runner on the street, evoking a sense of comradery and understanding, making you feel part of something bigger.

In an organised race, and granted I have only participated in a couple, this feeling is magnified, fostering a real sense of friendship and community.

So, it’s safe to say this is something I’m really looking forward to in July, alongside helping raise money for SFE 🙌

Bring on July!
